2026 Trottier Intern, Student at the Université de Montréal

Julien-Pierre, or more commonly known as J-P, began his bachelor’s degree in Physics at the Université de Montréal in the Fall of 2024. But why astrophysics? Some people believe it’s because of the movie Interstellar and the fact that he understands the physics behind all the scenes, while others suggest it was his 6th grade science project on exoplanets that sparked his passion. The real moment came when, as a young boy, gazing at the constellation Orion from his bedroom window in the winter, he realized that discovering the mysteries of the Universe would be his future endeavour. Much more poetic, no?

Having already completed several astrophysics research projects in Cégep, particularly on the cosmic microwave background radiation, supernovas, and solar eclipses, he feels ready to embark on a real one. This summer, he will be working as an intern alongside David Lafrenière to develop software for detecting exoplanets using the NIRPS spectrograph in Chile. From his
bedroom window to the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets, who would have thought?
