The Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets (IREx), affiliated with the Département de physique of de Université de Montréal, encourages candidates working in experimental, observational or theoretical astrophysics applied to the study of exoplanets or related fields of astrophysics and astronomical instrumentation to apply to the new Courtois Scientific Vanguard Fund of the Faculté des arts et des sciences Postdoctoral Competition.
The competition was launched in June 2025 by the Faculté des arts et des sciences of the Université de Montréal, thanks to a generous donation from the Fondation Courtois.
Six (6) fellows will receive support to conduct research in the natural and formal sciences, including, but not limited to, physics (astrophysics), chemistry, biology, earth sciences, mathematics, computer science, and neuroscience.
Application deadline: September 23, 2025, 11:59 p.m. (ET)
The application must include
*For that matter, candidates working in experimental, observational, or theoretical astrophysics applied to the study of exoplanets and related fields of astrophysics and astronomical instrumentation should reach out as soon as possible to René Doyon, the director of IREx: irex-applications@umontreal.ca)

The Courtois Foundation generously supports research activities from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the Université de Montréal.
In 2022, an unprecedented donation of $159 million led to the creation of the Courtois Institute for the discovery of new materials. Since then, the Foundation has established numerous research chairs that are helping to pioneer new knowledge in cutting-edge fields.
With a new donation to establish the Courtois Scientific Vanguard Fund at the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Foundation is now contributing $6 million to support the recruitment of top talent from outside Canada for postdoctoral fellowships, ensuring that fundamental, curiosity-driven research continues to thrive within the Faculty.
IREx consists of a growing team of about 60 people working on a variety of observational, theoretical, and instrumental projects related to the study of exoplanets and other related fields of astrophysics. They work within several research institutions located in Quebec, Canada (Université de Montréal, McGill University, Bishop’s University, Montreal Planetarium of Space for Life, Université Laval). Our professors, researchers, and students are actively involved in large international projects related to the detection and characterization of exoplanets, notably the James Webb Space Telescope, the SPIRou and NIRPS spectrographs, and have privileged access to time and data from these instruments. More information on IREx’s research programs can be found on our website.
IREx has also a vibrant science education and outreach program led by astrophysicists who are seasoned science communicators. We believe in the importance of training scientists who have exceptional scientific research skills, but also outstanding communication skills. All of our members are involved in bringing science to a wide audience in a variety of ways.
IREx advocates for diversity, inclusion and employment equity. We strongly encourage applications from women, visible and ethnic minorities, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to apply. With the support of our EDI committee, we are committed to the professional integration of people from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the physics research community.
