2023 Soirée d’initiation à la recherche en astrophysique

The Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets, in collaboration with the Department of Physics of the Université de Montréal, the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic and the Centre for Research in Astrophysics of Quebec, is organising the Soirée d’initiation à la recherche en astrophysique, an online version of the popular Journées d’initiation à la recherche en physique, held annually at the Université de Montréal.

This free activity is for Cégep students, and will take place on Wednesday, February 8th from 7PM to 9:30PM.

During this evening, you will have the opportunity to meet many graduate students in astrophysics, and to learn more about astrophysics, one of the fields of research of the Department of Physics of the Université de Montréal.

7:05PM: Welcome with Marie-Eve Naud and Frédérique Baron, astrophysicists and hosts of the event.
7:10PM: What you want to know about the Department of Physics, the campus and careers
7:35PM: Presentation of astrophysics research at the Université de Montréal
7:45PM: Presentation of telescopes with Nathalie Nguyen-Quoc Ouellette.
8:00PM: Students doing research in astrophysics presentations : Érika Le Bourdais, Guillaume Lenoir-Craig, Maria Sadikov, Hantz Nozard, Kim Morel, Pierrot Lamontagne, as well as Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo, professor in the department and co-founder of the D-PHY Committee and Parité Science.
9:00PM: Closing remarks and explanations for the raffle.
9:05PM: Panel: your questions for our presenters.

Presenters

 

Astrophysicists Marie-Eve Naud and Frédérique Baron will host the evening.

Nathalie Nguyen-Quoc Ouellette, astrophysicist and deputy director of the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic and iREx, as well as JWST Canadian Outreach Scientist will present the telescopes.

Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo, professor in the department and co-founder of the D-PHY Committee and Parité Science, will make a short video appearance.

Students doing research in astrophysics will also be present:

Érika Le Bourdais (white dwarf, exoasteroid, spectroscopy; supervisor: Patrick Dufour),
Guillaume Lenoir-Craig (massive stars, stellar winds, photometry; supervisor: Nicole St-Louis),
Maria Sadikov (galaxy clusters, artificial intelligence, X-rays; supervisors: Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo, Laurence Perreault-Levasseur),
Hantz Nozard (dark matter, bubble chamber; supervisor: Alan Robinson),
Kim Morel (exoplanets, spectroscopy, transit; supervisor: David Lafrenière),
Pierrot Lamontagne (transit, spectroscopy; simulator, supervisor: David Lafrenière).

The meeting will take place on Zoom, so please make sure you can use it. For privacy reasons, it will not be recorded. You will receive the link upon registration.

If you register before noon on Feb. 6th you will receive a Zoom link that day. If you register later, you will receive it on February 8th. Places are limited, register quickly!
