2024 Séjour découverte en astrophysique

2024 Séjour découverte en astrophysique

The Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets, in collaboration with the Department of Physics of the Université de Montréal, the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic and the Centre for Research in Astrophysics of Quebec are happy to join forces with the Faculté des arts et des sciences de l’Université de Montréal to offer a Séjour découverte en astrophysique (Astrophysics Discovery Day) in for cegep students on January 17, 2024. Please note all the activities of this event will be in French.

Registrations are closed.

During this day, the cegep students will have the opportunity to meet several physics and astrophysics students from the Université de Montréal and learn more about this discipline.

Presenters

Astrophysicist and science communicator Marie-Eve Naud of the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx) will be your host. During the day, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet astrophysicist Heidi White, scientific mediator for iREx and the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic (OMM), as well as Thomas Vandal and Érika Le Bourdais, students doing astrophysics research at iREx.

Frédérique Baron, Instrumentation Project Manager at the OMM, Loïc Albert, Instrumental Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Nathalie Nguyen-Quoc Ouellette, Astrophysicist and Deputy Director of the OMM and iREx, and Outreach Scientist for JWST will lead the afternoon tours.

Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo, professor in the department and co-founder of the D-PHY Committee and Parité Science, will also make a short video appearance.

At the Jamboree

Here are the students doing research in astrophysics who will be presenting their research in the morning at the jamboree:

  • Guillaume Lenoir-Craig (massive stars, stellar winds, photometry), supervisor: Nicole St-Louis,
  • Déreck-Alexandre Lizotte (exoplanets, atmospheres, transits), supervisors: Jason Rowe & David Lafrenière
  • Alexandrine L’Heureux (exoplanet, radial velocity, stellar activity), supervisor: René Doyon
  • Marine Prunier (High-energy astrophysics, galaxies, active black holes), supervisor: Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo
  • Pierrot Lamontagne (spectroscopy, blind exoplanet search, stellar activity), supervisor: David Lafrenière
  • Louis-Simon Guité (solar flares, avalanche model, space weather), Supervisor: Paul Charbonneau

During the afternoon interactive activity

In addition to Marie-Eve Naud, Heidi White, Thomas Vandal, Guillaume Lenoir-Craig, Déreck-Alexandre Lizotte, Alexandrine L’Heureux, Érika Le Bourdais, Pierrot Lamontagne and Loïc Albert, graduate students Leslie Moranta and Laurie Dauplaise will join us.

Facebook event to share

iREx and college students

From its creation, iREx and its partners have been organizing activities dedicated to introducing young students to the astronomy profession. For cegep students, we have planned

  • The “Journée d’initiation à la recherche en astrophysique”, offered in person between 2018 and 2020, and
  • the “Soirée d’initiation à la recherche en astrophysique”, offered from 2021 to 2023.

This year, we’re partnering with the Faculté des arts et des sciences to offer an in-person version of the event, under a new name, the Séjour découverte en astrophysique (Astrophysics Discovery Days).

About Séjours découverte in the Faculty of Arts and Science

The Université de Montréal Faculté des arts et des sciences’s Séjours découverte offer free immersion in fields such as anthropology, chemistry, computer science and history. A golden opportunity to meet professors and students, attend inspiring lectures, and participate in interactive workshops to explore the various academic options offered by the Faculté. These stays provide essential information for the transition to university, along with a guided tour of the campus. Registration is free, but the number of participants is limited. For more information, please contact us at communications@fas.umontreal.ca.
